EUGENE, Ore. – Justin Herbert continues to pile up the academic honors. The Ducks' starting quarterback the last four seasons is the Division I CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year®, the organization announced today.
Herbert was selected from all men's and women's sports sponsored by the NCAA. He is just the second Oregon student-athlete to claim the award, joining Galen Rupp (2009).
"It's a huge honor," Herbert said. "It's a reflection of the University of Oregon and our football program. The way we did things on and off the field, the way that Coach Cristobal and Coach Arroyo did things and what they emphasized set the standard for everyone.
"I couldn't have done it without them, I couldn't have done it without the Jaqua Center staff at the University of Oregon and all the remarkable opportunities we were given," Herbert added. "I just put the work in and they gave me the opportunities. I couldn't be more thankful."
The honor is just the latest for Herbert, who graduated with a degree in general science and a 4.01 GPA. In December, the Ducks quarterback became just the second player in Pac-12 Conference history to win the William V. Campbell Trophy. That came on the heels of Herbert being named the Pac-12 Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year for Division I Football for the second straight season.
"Justin Herbert is an outstanding young man," Oregon athletic director Rob Mullens said. "His accomplishments, work ethic, and impact during his academic and athletic career make him a very deserving recipient of the distinction of Academic All-American of the Year. We are proud of how Justin has always represented the University of Oregon, and being named the top student-athlete in the nation is a fitting way to recognize his achievements both during his senior year and during his four years as a Duck. Justin personifies what it means to be a student-athlete, and we are grateful for all of his efforts here at Oregon."
A four-year starter, Herbert led Oregon to a Pac-12 Conference championship, earned MVP honors in a Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin and a 12-2 record. During his senior season, he completed 286-of-428 passes for 3,471 yards and 32 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He also rushed for four touchdowns, including three in the Rose Bowl.
