Fifteen undergraduate researchers examining everything from television antiheroines to the benefits and risks of granting legal rights to nonhumans have been recognized with undergraduate research awards.
The awards span two different programs: minigrant awards and the 2018 humanities undergraduate research fellowship.
“These awards are designed to support and celebrate the work of the university’s undergraduate scholars,” said Karl Reasoner, program manager of the UO’s Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program. “The research projects are quite impressive, and they demonstrate the valuable contributions undergraduates can make in disciplines across campus.”
Nine UO undergraduate students majoring in disciplines ranging from linguistics to chemistry to cinema studies were awarded undergraduate minigrants. The awards, which are handed out by the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, a unit within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, are given to students to assist with research expenses including purchasing supplies and materials and paying for travel that is necessary to conduct research.
The scholars receive up to $1,000 in research support and present their research at the UO Undergraduate Research Symposium on May 17. Visit the minigrant website for a full list of scholars.
Six UO undergraduate students were selected as 2018 humanities undergraduate research fellows. The program is designed to engage students in humanities-related research under the mentorship of a faculty member.
During the fellowship period the scholars participate in education and training related to research skills development, communicating research and career preparation. As part of the fellowship, the students receive a $2,500 award and present their research at the UO Undergraduate Research Symposium.
The program is administered jointly by the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, the Oregon Humanities Center and the Division of Undergraduate Studies. Visit the Humanities Undergraduate Research Fellowship website for a full list of scholars.
