Awards & Accolades

University of Oregon employees strive for excellence in teaching, research, artistic expression, and the generation and application of knowledge. They are frequently honored for their research, scholarship, teaching, leadership and service that exemplifies individual excellence and delivers on our institutional purpose. 

Recognizing individual achievements acknowledges contributions to the UO and their profession and celebrates accomplishments such as grants, honors and fellowships, elections to regional and national boards or committees in professional organizations, and other career awards. Jesse Abdenour receives Fulbright award to study concussion prevention in rugby
Jesse Abdenour, an associate professor in the School of Journalism and Communication, has been awarded a Fulbright US Scholar Program award for the 2024-25 academic year. Abdenour will travel to New Zealand to investigate cultural attitudes toward concussions in rugby and how documentary films might influence those attitudes.
Neil O'Brian named Andrew Carnegie Fellow
Neil O'Brian, assistant professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Political Science, has been named to the 2024 class of Andrew Carnegie Fellows. The fellowship includes a $200,000 grant to support his research on the partisan divide in trust in health care, particularly how political affiliation affects trust in doctors.
Camisha Russell named Mellon Foundation New Directions Fellow
Camisha Russell, associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Philosophy, has been named a Mellon Foundation New Directions Fellow. She is UO's first faculty member to receive this honor. Russell’s project explores the historical relationship between Blackness and Indigeneity in the United States, focusing on the genocide of Native Americans and the enslavement of Africans.
Vickie DeRose awarded National Science Foundation creativity extension
Vickie DeRose, professor and head of chemistry and biochemistry, College of Arts and Sciences, has received a 2024 creativity extension from the National Science Foundation for research into the structure and function of ribonucleic acid (RNA) through its interactions with metal ions.    
Lauren Hallett receives Fulbright award for Mediterranean climate research
Lauren Hallett, an associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, departments of biology and environmental studies, has been awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program award for the 2024-25 academic year. Hallett will travel to Argentina, Spain and Australia to study Mediterranean climates and collaborate with colleagues from the Nutrient Network, a global grassroots research effort studying the human impacts of nitrogen enrichment.
Melissa Redford awarded Fulbright to study bilingualism in childhood development
Melissa Redford, a professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Linguistics, has been awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study how bilingualism affects childhood development. She will collaborate with researchers at the University of Quebec and the University of Montreal during the 2024-25 academic year.
Erin Chaparro awarded grant to study team-initiated problem solving
Erin Chaparro, a research associate professor in the College of Education, has been awarded a $4 million federal grant to study team-initiated problem solving in schools. The five-year project will involve 72 schools across California, Georgia and the Northeast. Keith Smolkowski of the Oregon Research Institute and Jeff Gau, a University of Oregon research associate, are also part of the research team. 
Kevin Nute awarded a residency at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater
Kevin Nute, professor emeritus in the College of Design's School of Architecture and Environment, received a funded residency at Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic modernist home. Nute will study the house's timeless elements, building on his recent book "Embodied Time: Temporal Cues in Built Spaces." 
Sara Schmitt awarded grant for early childhood curriculum evaluation
Sara Schmitt, an associate professor in the College of Education, has been awarded a $4 million grant from the Institute of Education Sciences to evaluate the Early Learning Matters curriculum. The grant supports a multi-state project involving seven universities to address disparities in access to high-quality early childhood education.
Vera Keller shortlisted for Pfizer Award
Vera Keller, professor in the College of Arts and Sciences, Department of History, has been shortlisted for the 2023 Pfizer Award for outstanding books on the history of science. Keller was nominated for her work "The Interlopers: Early Stuart Projects and the Undisciplining of Knowledge."
