UO mathematics professor Marie Vitulli has been selected to deliver the 2014 Falconer Lecture at the Association for Women in Mathematics MathFest.
The event will take place Aug. 6-9 in Portland. Vitulli will lecture on the topic “From Algebraic to Weak Subintegral Extensions in Algebra and Geometry.”
Over her long career, Vitulli has been an advocate for the advancement of women in mathematics. While at the UO, she was involved in the creation and administration of a scholarship program for undergraduate women in mathematics and the physical sciences and was a founding member of a group that advised university administration on issues of concern to women faculty.
Vitulli created and maintains the award-winning website Women in Math Web Project. She also has been an active member of the AWM for decades through membership on a variety of committees that oversee and run the programs of the association. She currently chairs the group’s advocacy and policy portfolio and serves on the association’s executive committee.
Vitulli earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Rochester and master’s and doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania. After completing her doctorate, Vitulli joined the faculty at the UO and has remained there for her entire academic career.
