Silverman lectures at Portland hospital on health care sensibilities of Roma

A story in the Saturday, Feb. 1 Oregonian described a lecture a day earlier by University of Oregon anthropology Professor Carol Silverman, an expert on Roma (Gypsy) culture and traditions.

Silverman – who has spent nearly four decades studying the Roma culture – spoke to a group of doctors, nurses and community members about Roma sensibilities in health care situations. The talk was at Portland's Providence St. Vincent Medical Center.

Silverman said Roma patients go to their doctors just like other patients, but there may be differences in the ways they relate to their bodies, gender sensibilities and family structure.
