UO music professor Alexandre Dossin recently was added to the prestigious roster of Steinway Artists for his lifetime of performance and piano mastery.
A professor of piano performance and literature in the UO’s School of Music and Dance, Dossin is an ardent admirer of the composer Franz Liszt and is the vice-president of the American Liszt Society and president of its Oregon Chapter. He recently performed at the Steinway and Sons Gallery in Los Angeles to mark his inclusion on the Steinway list.
In the video included here, Dossin performs Liszt's paraphrase of the "Waltz from the Opera Faust" by the French composer Charles-François Gounod.
In this scene, the hero Faust goes to a grand ball to meet the beautiful young woman Marguerite, who the devil has used to tempt Faust into a bargain for his soul, for the first time.
The music “really brings the scene from the opera alive,” Dossin said.
Dossin performs around the world as well as on the UO campus, including at historic Beall Hall. For more on his work, see “Alexandre Dossin Performs Liszt” and “Dossin named Steinway Artist” on the music school’s website.
