Updates coming to university’s employee leave programs

The University of Oregon is making updates to the administration of its Paid Leave Oregon equivalent plan for medical and other protected employee leaves. You may have heard this program referred to as “Paid Family and Medical Leave” or “PFML."

Effective Jan. 1, 2026:

  • UO’s Paid Leave Oregon program administration will shift from The Standard to a new vendor, Unum. (Claims that began prior to Jan. 1, 2026, will remain with The Standard.)
  • We’ll also begin referring to the program simply as “Paid Leave Oregon,” rather than “Paid Family and Medical Leave,” to align with Unum’s terminology.

With this transition, several processes will become more streamlined and user-friendly. Employees taking protected leave will be able to:

  • File and track claims online through the MyUnum app or website.
  • Receive payments by direct deposit instead of waiting for mailed checks.
  • Upload documents digitally from a phone or computer.
  • Opt in to email or text updates for reminders and claim notifications.
  • Report intermittent absences online, eliminating the need for phone calls.

In addition, all employees on protected leave will now report their accrued leave use in UKG, the university’s timekeeping system.

These updates come after a careful review of our current processes and input from employees, supervisors, and payroll and HR staff across campus. Moving to Unum and integrating more closely with UKG will make leave administration smoother, more transparent and easier for everyone involved.

If you have a current protected leave claim or have filed a claim for 2026, you will hear from the UO Leaves Team soon with your next steps.
