Students flock to campus for Week of Welcome

Bolstered by high vaccination rates among staff and students and buoyed with the excitement of new and returning Ducks being back on campus, the University of Oregon’s Week of Welcome was brimming with celebration.

“This has always been my favorite week, and even more so this year, with our return to in-person instruction,” said UO President Michael H. Schill. “Thanks to required vaccinations, testing, masking and other safety measures, the residence halls will be one of the safest places to live and learn in our community. We’ve missed our students and are thrilled to have them back.”

The university required additional COVID-19 precautions as they welcomed students for move-in to protect campus and the community. After getting settled in their new homes, the students were off to Autzen Stadium for the traditional class photo—times 2. With last year’s event canceled due to COVID-19 safety protocols, the Class of 2024 finally had their opportunity to gather on the field for their class photo, followed by the Class of 2025.

Much of Friday focused on academic opportunities in the schools and colleges, connecting with first-year interest groups, and learning about ways to get involved in campus life. The Flock Party on the Erb Memorial Union Green showcased the wide range of student clubs and activity groups.

Friday evening was full of Duck spirt. An introduction to UO athletics at Hayward Field was followed by a parade to the Student Recreation Center—marching band included—where Duck N2 the Rec filled the evening with games and giveaways.

The rest of the weekend allowed first-year, second-year and transfer students to all get better acquainted with campus. Student ambassadors led guided campus tours on Saturday. On Sunday new Ducks could get assistance on locating their classrooms for the week ahead.

“The energy of Week of Welcome is always exhilarating but this year was special, as we welcomed two classes!”, said Cora Bennett, director of Student Orientation Programs. “We’re so proud of our students, who are the heart of our university, and proud to be part of their UO experience.”
