Annual Campus Night Safety Walk is set for Nov. 10

As winter approaches and night comes earlier, thousands of Ducks walk the campus in darkness every evening, making safety even more important.

Hundreds of lamps and well-pruned trees keep major pathways clear and well lit, even after sunset. But some spots on campus always could be safer, which is the purpose of the annual Campus Night Safety Walk.

Campus Planning and Facilities Management, the Office of the Dean of Students, the University of Oregon Police Department, Safety and Risk Services, and the ASUO will host the annual event Thursday, Nov. 10. All members of the campus community are invited to attend.

The safety walk allows campus community members to point out areas in need of better lighting or landscaping that could make pathways safer at night for pedestrians. Each year, staff from Campus Planning and Facilities Management notes and prioritizes suggestions for improvements and then secures funding to complete as much of the work as possible.

"Student safety is a top priority for my administration this year," ASUO President Quinn Haaga said. "We are so excited about this event bringing together folks from all across campus and the community to focus on campus safety issues. I feel and have heard from a number of students that campus is dangerous at night time and that many areas are inaccessible. We are very committed to addressing this issue head-on this year.”

The event starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Erb Memorial Union’s Swindells Room,  or Room 230, with a quick overview of past projects and discussion of the walking route for the night. Then the group will leave for a walk around campus, finishing by 7 p.m. Pizza will be provided as an incentive for those who have to delay or skip dinner to attend.
