Author Barry Lopez to appear at JSMA with artist Rick Bartow

Artist Rick Bartow and writer Barry Lopez will discuss their reflections on life, art, philosophy and the natural world at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art as part of Bartow’s exhibit “Things You Know But Cannot Explain.”

The event will take place Saturday, July 18, at 2 p.m.

Barry Lopez grew up in California and New York before moving to Oregon in 1968.  He received the National Book Award for his 1986 book “Arctic Dreams,” and his novel “Of Wolves and Men” was a National Book Award finalist that won the John Burroughs and Christopher medals. His other works include “Light Action in the Caribbean,” “Field Notes” and “Resistance.”

Rick Bartow is a prominent Native American artist who was born in Newport in 1946. He is a member of the Wiyot tribe and a veteran of the Vietnam War. His work is permanently held in more than 60 public institutions in the United States.

“Rick and Barry are longtime friends,” said Jill Hartz, the art museum’s executive director and co-curator of the exhibition. “They deeply admire one another’s work and share a way of looking at and responding to the world that is sure to make this a thoughtful and engaging program.”

More than 120 paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints and mixed media make up “Things You Know But Cannot Explain.” The exhibition draws from public and private collections as well as Bartow’s studio.

The art work explores themes central to the Bartow’s life, including work made after his stroke in August 2013. The exhibition is on view through Aug. 9.
