Bus riders will be required to pay as they board the EmX

Upcoming changes start in February to ride the Lane Transit District EmX, the articulated green bus that drives alongside the University of Oregon campus on Franklin Boulevard and beyond.

Beginning on Feb. 1, riders will need to pay as they board the EmX using the Umo app or tap card (available for those without a smartphone). This fare validation has been required on the buses that go along the LTD neighborhood routes, but the equipment was not in place on the EmX bus. Instead, transit officers checked fares in person.

To pay to ride the EmX, open the Umo app and hold the QR code up to the on-board reader located at the front and rear doors. Or scan the bar code on the back of the tap card.

At high-traffic stations near the UO, and at the Eugene, Springfield, Centennial, Seneca and Commerce stations, look for QR code signs located at the top of the EmX ticket vending machine to pay fare with the Umo app before boarding.

To use the QR code signs:

  1. Open the Umo app.
  2. If the app is not already connected to a bus pass, redeem a benefit code from UO.
  3. Select “Code” from the menu at the bottom and then select “Scan.”
  4. Scan the QR code located at the top of the EmX ticket vending machine.

Cash is still accepted at ticket vending machines and customer service centers.

All UO employees and students are eligible for a free bus pass. To obtain or redeem a benefit code, follow the instructions on the bus section of the Transportation Services website. A new code is released annually before the start of fall term and the academic year.

LTD’s winter route and schedule adjustments begin Feb. 2.
