Campus crews work to clear debris left by unexpected ice storm

More than 100 of the 4,200 trees on campus were damaged in Saturday's ice storm, with about 25 suffering severe damage, according to campus exterior supervisor Garrick Mishaga.

"Saturday was a day we didn't expect," Mishaga said. "Every time I heard something cracking, my stomach turned. I feel sad about the conditions of the tree canopy on campus.”

Temperatures were expected to rise, but did not, as a half-inch of freezing rain coated seven inches of snow, which was more than many trees could handle.

Campus crews are working to get the branches cleaned up but it will likely take several weeks to get it all done, Mishaga said.

Campus landscape architect Jane Brubaker is doing an assessment of tree damage, he said.
