COMING WEEK: UO attractions begin with a Craft Center sale of pottery and glass.
Other events coming soon to campus include two concerts, a lecture on global warming, a double feature movie hosted by Ducks after Dark, free admission to the two campus museums, and the ASUO Street Faire.
LECTURES
- A lecture titled, "What is Art For?" will be given by Philip Yenawine, cofounder of Visual Understanding in Education on Thursday, May 1, from 6-7 p.m. in Lillis, Room 182.
- Author Benjamin Ross will present “Dead End: Suburban Sprawl and the Rebirth of American Urbanism” on Sunday, May 4, from 4-6 p.m. at Cozmic Pizza. The lecture is part of the 2014 McCall Society Speaker Series.
- On Wednesday, May 7, a lecture titled, Living in Denial: Climate Change, Emotions, and Everyday Life will be held in Willamette Hall, Room 100 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Sociologist Kari Noorgard will explore the issue of global warming and the inactive public response of Western nations.
MUSIC
- A free concert will be held on Sunday, May 4, as part of the Oregon Composers Forum series. The series will feature chamber and solo works by UO student composers.
- UO Jazz Ensembles will perform on Wednesday, May 7, at 7 p.m. in Beall Concert Hall. UO alumnus Josh Deutsch will be featured in the concert. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from the UO Ticket Office, 541-346-4363.
FILM
- On Thursday, May 1, The Collegiate Recovery Center will show The Anonymous People Film Screening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Lillis, Room 182. The film is a feature documentary about the 23 million Americans living in long-term recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs. A group conversation will be held after the film; free parking and refreshments will be provided.
- On Thursday, May 1 from 8:30 p.m. to midnight, a Ducks After Dark Double Feature will be held in the PLC, Room 180. A double-header movie night is held every Thursday; this week’s movies are “Catch Me If You Can” and “The Great Gatsby.”
EVENTS
- The UO Craft Center will host an event, Loneliest Pottery and Glass Sale, on Thursday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the EMU outside of the Buzz Café. As the Craft Center prepares for its upcoming move, there are an abundance of homemade pieces that are unable to be transferred to the new location; homemade pieces will be sold starting at a fraction of a dollar.
- On Friday, May 2, free admission will be offered to the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural and Cultural History as part of Free First Fridays. The museums will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Come to the EMU amphitheater on Friday, May 2, from noon to 6:30 p.m. for the Student Activities and Resource Center’s Spring Carnival. The event will include carnival-themed games, student a capella performances, and a variety of activities.
- From May 7-10, the ASUO Street Faire will be held on 13th Avenue with a variety of artisans, vendors, nonprofit organizations, and student programs in attendance.
