Employees are required to complete a new cybersecurity awareness training to help fortify the University of Oregon's digital defenses. Cyberattacks and data breaches target employee accounts and other access points to infiltrate UO systems, with email continuing to be the most common point of entry. The training covers various aspects of cybersecurity, including recognizing phishing attempts, creating strong passwords, working remotely and in the cloud, and securing personal devices.
“Cyber awareness training is crucial in equipping our workforce with the knowledge and skills needed to protect themselves and the university from cyber threats,” said José A. Domínguez, chief information security officer. “Cybersecurity is a responsibility we all share.”
Information Services administers the twenty-minute online training on a new Secure-U Training platform.
All faculty, classified employees, officers of administration, graduate employees and student employees are required to complete the training by May 17. Hourly employees will be paid for time spent taking the training. Salaried employees should complete the training during their regular working hours. Those without access to a computer workstation should work with their supervisor to make arrangements to complete the training.
Newly hired employees will complete the training as part of their initial onboarding. The training will be made available to additional community members, including students, at a later time.
“An educated, informed and alert community is an important line of defense. We are committed to protecting you and the university to the greatest extent possible,” Domínguez said. “We appreciate your time spent taking the training, examining related resources and thinking about how to make UO’s digital spaces safer and protecting the university against cyberattacks.”
