It’s been a year – time for Fembot to take a good hard look at itself.

The website, produced by the Center for the Study of Women in Society, is a scholarly international collaboration promoting research on gender, media and technology.

Slightly over a year after the website launched its first feature, Laundry Day, members of the collective will meet Feb. 9-10 at the White Stag Building in Portland for a two-day “Unconference” to discuss Fembot’s past, present and future. Goals include:

• To think collectively and critically about the features Fembot has experimented with over the past year
• To think about the project holistically and in light of its more-or-less organic unfolding over the past eighteen months
• To collaboratively assess the site’s design and functionality, as well as its aesthetics, particularly in relation to a sister project, FemTechNet
• To establish goals for the coming year, including discussion of a Fembot ThatCamp.

The term "fembot" was originally used to describe a female robot and was used in both the television show "The Bionic Woman" and the "Austin Powers" movie series and has since become a word that many feminists use to describe themselves.
