The Fraternity & Sorority Life community celebrated the accomplishments of individuals and organizations recently with the annual Fraternity and Sorority Excellence Awards.
This annual event brings together hundreds of fraternity and sorority members, faculty, staff and alumni to recognize achievement of the core values of Greek life. Individuals and organizations submit awards applications and nominations, which are reviewed by members of the Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council.
More than 50 students received academic scholarships and individual awards, including the Shelley Sutherland $1,000 Scholarship, Phi Kappa Simga Scholarship and the Panhellenic Council Continuing Education Scholarship. Individual awards included outstanding chapter advisor, emerging leader of the year, outstanding house director, campus partner of the year, chapter president of the year, fraternity man of the year, outstanding member involvement and outstanding community service.
The annual sorority woman of the year award was renamed in honor of former Pi Beta Phi President Alysia Kezerian, who suffered serious injuries as a result of a hiking accident in August 2015.
“Alysia's overwhelming strength and radiating spirit inspired myself and countless others,” said current Pi Phi President Emily McAlindin. “With her unwavering dedication and pure passion she poured into her position as chapter president, she has established a leadership standard that I personally aim to emulate every day.”
The award was presented by Justin Shukas, director of Fraternity & Sorority Life; Roger Thompson, vice president for enrollment management; and Lauren Smith, a representative from Pi Beta Phi’s Regional Advisory Board. The sorority woman of the year award recognizes an individual for her outstanding and continued service to the Greek community, strong academics, significant campus and community participation and strong personal character and for being a positive role model for the 2015-16 school year.
In addition to individual awards, fraternity and sorority chapters were eligible to receive awards in the following areas: outstanding philanthropy, most involved, brotherhood/sisterhood, civic engagement, outstanding leadership development, intellectual development and academic support, outstanding values integration and chapter of the year.
Pi Beta Phi sorority and Delta Tau Delta fraternity were the recipients of the chapter of the year awards. The chapters have exhibited outstanding achievements academically, philanthropically and socially.
