The timeline for the renovation of historic Hayward Field has been adjusted to accommodate planning that has taken longer than anticipated.
While the relocation of a cellphone tower will move forward this month, updates to the east grandstand will now begin in June 2017 rather than this fall as first announced.
“With a project of this scale and turnaround time from start to finish, we wanted to make sure our plans were not only worthy of this global icon of track and field but also limited disruptions to scheduled events and the UO track and field team,” said Paul Weinhold, president and CEO of the University of Oregon Foundation, the entity overseeing the project.
The renovation will still be completed in two phases, with construction of the east grandstand and south bowl beginning June 2017, following the NCAA Championships. Phase one will be completed May 2018 to accommodate special spring and summer events.
“With this revised timeline, we have the potential to host additional events in the 2017 track season, while keeping strong momentum for the long-term vision and restoration of this historic venue,” said Vin Lananna, UO associate athletic director.
Demolition of the Bowerman Building and west grandstand construction will take place from July 2018 to May 2019.
“We continue to keep the incredible history of Hayward Field front and center in our thinking,” Weinhold said. “At the same time, we have a strong design that will create an updated facility and provide a world-class athletic and academic experience for years to come.”
The total cost of the project has not been determined, as construction contracts have not been executed.
