As the University of Oregon begins its gradual transition to a closer-to-normal campus experience, new student orientation, known as IntroDUCKtion, has already taken flight.

“The orientation team is truly excited to offer an in-person component to our IntroDUCKtion experience for the 2021 entering class,” said Cora Bennett, the director of Student Orientation Programs.

To accommodate smaller groups of about 200 students per session, Bennett said her team expanded its schedule to provide 25 full-day, in-person IntroDUCKtion events throughout July, August and September.

At the in-person orientation sessions, incoming Ducks are divided into “flocks” that are led by student orientation staff. The students learn about academic expectations at the UO and the resources available to help them be successful. Sessions are also offered to help students consider how their own personal identities can blend with those of their peers to create a community of individuals.

While students are exploring the UO with their flocks, parents and family members can attend meet-and-greet sessions and presentations to learn about on-campus housing, health care and insurance, with additional programs to support them as they help their students make a successful transition to college.

On-campus sessions are paired with remote orientation requirements, including online presentations about student involvement, faculty perspective videos, academic advising appointments, placement tests and registration for fall courses.

“Through this hybrid programming, we’re able to provide our new Ducks with a meaningful small-group experience that complements the online educational pieces,” Bennett said.
