Charles Martinez, an associate psychology professor in the College of Education, has received the 2013 Diversity Award from the Oregon Psychological Association.
The award recognizes a licensed psychologist with a record of a strong and consistent commitment to diversity through their clinical work, research, teaching, advocacy, organizational policy, leadership, mentorship and/or community service, the association said.
The association defines diversity to include work “with a wide range of minority populations and efforts related to social justice, inclusion, equity, cultural awareness and competence.”
Martinez -- who previously served as the UO's vice president for institutional equity and diversity -- is a clinical psychologist and associate professor in the Educational Methodology, Policy, and Leadership department, where he directs the Center for Equity Promotion. The center works with communities to better understand and support the development of children and families, particularly those who are underserved by education, health and social service systems.
Martinez studies factors that promote healthy adjustment for families and children following stressful life events such as changes in family structure, socioeconomic status, physical and/or emotional health, acculturation and immigration status.
