‘MASSIVE’ recital to showcase top UO talent

On Thursday, Jan. 14, the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance will unleash the full power of its performing faculty on a single event, titled “MASSIVE.”

The “megarecital” will feature a cross section of nearly 20 members of the performance faculty of the School of Music and Dance, from both the dance and music areas.

The MASSIVE event will start at 7:30 p.m. in historic Beall Concert Hall on the UO campus. Tickets are available at the door or in advance from the UO Ticket Office, 541-346-4363 or tickets.uoregon.edu. General admission is $10; $8 for students and seniors.

Associate Professor Lydia Van Dreel, who teaches horn at the UO and is one of the event’s primary coordinators, said the idea for “MASSIVE” arose through a desire to highlight the diversity of the UO’s dance and music faculty.

“The UO hosts such fantastic guest artists, sometimes I think it’s too easy to forget the wealth of home-grown talent we have here on campus,” Van Dreel said.

“I think one of the telling elements of this event is the collaboration between the dance and music faculties,” Van Dreel added. “MASSIVE offers a real opportunity for concertgoers who may be unfamiliar with our performance programs to see a true sampler of the outstanding work my colleagues do.”

Musical selections, which will be performed by a range of faculty, students and guests, will date from the beginning of the 20th century to the beginning of the 21st. The program clocks in at just over two hours and will include:

  • Endre Szervánszky’s Wind Quintet #1 performed by the Oregon Wind Quintet (Molly Barth, flute; Melissa Peña, oboe; Louis DeMartino, clarinet; Lydia Van Dreel, horn; and Steve Vacchi, bassoon).
