New software will streamline curriculum development

Hundreds of new or revised courses are proposed every year at the UO. And for each, faculty and staff must go through a lengthy, multi-step review.

CourseLeaf, a new software tool in the Office of Academic Affairs, is expected to streamline the process of curriculum development.

The office has adopted the curriculum management software to streamline what it calls “the cumbersome and confusing course and curriculum proposal process.”

The software will support faculty who want to design or amend curricula, and it will assist the committees charged with reviewing academic programming.

CourseLeaf was selected because it can be customized to reflect the forms, processes and policies of the UO. It allows those responsibilities to be managed and communicated through a single, unified platform, the office said.

The software doesn’t change or create policy, but it improves management of the curriculum development process, the office said.

CourseLeaf is expected to be implemented in fall 2014. A team involved in the transition to CourseLeaf is transferring content and collecting materials on current guidelines and procedures.

The team will address curriculum components this fall, the office said.
