Timely graduation and career preparation have been focal points at the University of Oregon for decades. With Oregon Rising, these specific goals get a refreshed approach, marked by strategy and measurement.
Goal — Enhance pathways to timely graduation
Students arrive at our university in pursuit of their college degrees with hopes for successful lives, fulfilling careers and opportunities to contribute to our society at large. We pledge to support them during their time with us and to enhance pathways to timely graduation and degree completion. Strategies
- Establish a campuswide student policy and practice action team that serves as the central coordinating body to focus on understanding and removing institutional barriers to timely graduation.
- Require ongoing, research-informed curriculum analysis in the schools/colleges to identify and remove curricular barriers to timely graduation.
- Mobilize a university-wide “finish in four” effort. (Note: “Finish in four” will be adapted to “finish in five” as program durations warrant.) Work together across academic and student support units to create unified principles for student success, and align academic advising practices across the university.
- Direct effective targeted financial assistance to students.
Goal — Become a leader in career preparation
We also have a responsibility to our students and families to ensure that our students’ time at the UO prepares them for the opportunities and challenges of a complex globally connected world. We will meet this responsibility by increasing connections and experiences for students in ways that more directly prepare them for successful pursuits after graduation. Strategies
- Define career preparation and experiential learning to establish a common understanding and language across the university.
- Engage and support academic units, faculty and staff to embed career-focused transferable skills into curriculum.
- Establish “career communities” to provide industry-informed career guidance for students.
- Leverage our alumni network to provide students opportunities for experiential learning, internships and jobs.
- Adopt a campuswide platform to facilitate student and alumni engagement.
