A new play at the UO is based on the premise that science isn’t boring, it just lacks for good presentation.

The Department of Theatre Arts is redefining how science can be taught through the new play, “Wonder if Wonder Why” which will premiere at the Hope Theatre on May 26. Tickets are free to UO students.

“(It’s) an original piece, devised by 10-plus students and myself,” said UO professor and director of the play John Schmor. “It is a variety show that ranges across several topics, but has its ‘through line’ scenes about the history of light science … (it’s) a fun ride through the uncanny facts of our world.”

The play had its origin last summer when Schmor read an article on science illiteracy and a growing American antipathy towards studying science. Schmor’s students also had an interest in learning more about science, and when UO physics professor Stanley Micklavzina came to speak to Schmor’s class, he and his students decided do a play about science — specifically the science of light.

Not all of the writers of the play were theatre arts majors. According to Schmor, some of the students came from the geology, marine biology and environmental science departments.

“I’m hoping this play can appeal to anyone interested in theatre as something more than just the presentation of a well-made play,” Schmor said.

The play is appropriate for all ages. Tickets are $14 for UO faculty and staff and $16 for general audiences. The play will be performed May 26, 27 and 28 and June 2, 3 and 4.
