The University of Oregon School of Law recently welcomed an osprey couple to their new, permanent home on a perch created solely for their safety.
For the past five years, the ospreys' nest was located on top of a light pole at the UO’s Hayward Field.
Installation of the new perch began on March 29. The law school was chosen for its proximity to the old nest and the Willamette River, and its more secluded, private location.
Relocation of the osprey nest will increase safety for the birds and their future offspring as well as people attending Hayward Field events.
“Our location is the logical home for the new nest for a few reasons: The osprey family isn’t at risk from the lighting or electrical systems, any debris falling from the nest will not impact the public in any way and it is within an acceptable distance from the old nest to accommodate the osprey,” said Jim Horstrup, building manager for the William W. Knight Law Center.
Osprey nest in a variety of locations, typically near bodies of water that provide food supplies for the fish-eating birds. In addition to the newly relocated osprey pair, two more of the birds live within the UO community – one at Autzen Stadium and another at the football practice field.
The new osprey nest at the UO School of Law is a reflection of the university’s commitment to a healthy and diverse environment.
