The University of Oregon is inviting community members to submit proposals to use materials salvaged from Hayward Field.
Many salvaged items have been incorporated into the new facility, which will host the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials in 2021 and the World Athletics Championships in 2022. Salvaged elements from the field showcase the rich heritage of the original stadium through graphics and signage as well as exhibits in Hayward Hall, the new 4,000-square-foot museum under the east grandstand.
A bench made of bleachers from the east grandstand at Historic Hayward Field is just one example of how salvaged materials are integrated into the new facility.
Many of the remaining items are inventoried for distribution, along with a description of the application process. Items slated for distribution include signs, equipment, track material, furniture and other building materials.
An advisory committee comprised of campus and community stakeholders will review proposals and make recommendations on how to distribute salvaged items. Initial review will be completed by Dec. 1. If materials remain, additional proposals will be accepted.
The committee has representatives from the following organizations:
- Lane County Historical Society
- Oregon Historical Society
- City of Eugene
- City of Springfield
- Lane County government
- Travel Lane County
- University of Oregon
- UO faculty
- UO running club
- UO track and field
- UO Libraries – Special Collections and University Archives
The reconstruction of Hayward Field, which was fully funded by gifts from Penny and Phil Knight and more than 50 other donors, began in the summer of 2018. Hayward Field sets a new standard for sports venues, creates world-class training and competition facilities for the UO’s student-athletes, and incorporates new laboratories and research facilities to better understand the potential of human performance.
