University of Oregon faculty can submit proposals through Jan. 13 for Freshman Seminars and Jan. 31 for Freshman Interest Groups, for the 2014-15 academic year.
Freshman Seminars provide interactive coursework for first-year students in a small classroom. Approximately 10 Freshman Seminars are taught per term; each three- or four-credit seminar is limited to 18-23 students.
Seminars introduce thought-provoking and challenging subjects to give freshmen a focused academic experience during their first year.
Faculty in all disciplines are encouraged to submit a proposal for an area of interest. Seminar topics vary widely; current topics include nutrition myths, travel writing, Japanese popular culture and more.
To participate, complete the Freshman Seminar proposal form. Proposals will be accepted through Jan. 13. For more information contact Amy Keir at 541-346-1136.
Freshman Interest Groups bring first-year students with similar interests together through coursework, group discussion and outside activities.
Each FIG consists of 20-25 students who attend two university lecture classes and a FIG seminar called “College Connections” taught by an upper-class mentor and a faculty member.
The 1-credit “College Connections” seminar is taught by a FIG faculty member andexplores related themes between the two lecture classes. FIGS support students during social and academic transitions into university life.
The FIG allows students to collectively explore the related coursework and take part in outside activities. Past activitieshave included an archeological dig on the Oregon coast, trips to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and a viewing of the Eugene Symphony.
