A long weekend of cancellations and postponements gave way to a resumption of campus activities on Monday morning, as the University of Oregon's Eugene campus prepared for a normal schedule of final exams and events from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Finals that had been scheduled for Monday at 8 a.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. were rescheduled for either Monday afternoon or Wednesday. In a few cases, finals were rescheduled to other times of the day, or on Tuesday or Thursday.
Students were advised to check their "Text Schedules" in DuckWeb or the online class schedule (classes.uoregon.edu) to confirm new days, times, and in some cases, classroom locations. Those whose rescheduled exams conflict with other, already scheduled exams, should attend their originally scheduled exams and contact faculty for the rescheduled exams to arrange an alternate time. Faculty members have been asked to be flexible when conflicts arise.
Monday's resumption of activities follows a full weekend of cancellations. Classes and events were called off at 2 p.m. on Friday, after a snowstorm dropped as much as eight inches of snow on Eugene over the course of the morning.
An extreme “Arctic express” event followed, pushing nighttime temperatures into single digits, with daytime highs in the 20s. All weekend events were cancelled – although the Knight Library reopened to accommodate students' study needs – and residents throughout the area were advised to stay home for safety reasons.
City streets remained snowpacked and slippery on Monday morning, prompting Monday's modified schedule at the UO, which will allow members of the campus community to avoid travel during the most hazardous periods of the day.
Faculty, staff and students were urged to use extreme caution when traveling to and from campus on Monday; riding the LTD bus system was recommended. Those who feel uncomfortable with the commuting conditions were urged to remain home and contact their supervisors or faculty.
