UO study looks at effects of social media on intelligence

Register-Guard: Are social media making us dumb? The answer is “yes” and “no,” according to a study by researchers who include Azim Shariff, assistant professor of psychology at the University of Oregon. The “yes” is because, in an experiment conducted at the UO, subjects were content to copy the answers of their peers — which appeared on a computer screen — rather than to use their own analytical abilities to get to the answer. The “no” is because the copiers recognized the right answers and were able to use them for their own benefit.

This meant that the current pool could serve a new purpose, according to Haunert. Discussions regarding the current pool began and eventually led to a plan that the pool would be converted into a cistern, a tank that collects run-off rainwater from the roof. This water will then be utilized as the water flushed in the toilets throughout the facility.

At least we’ll be wearing more suitable shoes than the president.
