UO journalism professor chosen for Scripps social media grant

Journalism professor Scott Maier will spend two weeks at the Washington bureau of the Scripps media company this summer to learn how news outlets use social media to enhance communications.

Maier is among this year’s recipients of a Scripps Howard Foundation Visiting Professors in Social Media Grant. He is one of six educators chosen from among members of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.

The grants allow faculty to travel to different media outlets for a two-week stay. The visit allows educators to see first-hand how media organizations are using social media to deliver content and take that knowledge back to their classrooms.

The second phase of the program pays for a representative of the outlet to travel to the faculty member’s campus for a three- to five-day visit.

Maier’s application was chosen from among 43 submittals. He is a news editorial professor in the UO School of Journalism and Communication
