Unpack the Quack returns to the University of Oregon Sept. 26 – you can join more than 300 volunteers who will help Ducks nest in their new home.
University Housing is seeking volunteers for the annual move-in assistance and welcome program for residence hall students and their families. On Sept. 26, volunteers will serve as UO ambassadors as they help students unload vehicles and move in.
All volunteers and greeters need to be staff, faculty, students or alumni.
Volunteers are asked to work at least one 2.5-hour shift. Heavy lifting is not required; students and their families are expected to handle any unusually heavy or fragile items, including electronics. The volunteers' main duty is to meet students at unloading zones and help get items up into the residence hall rooms, and then return to the loading zones to help the next family.
“This is a great way for you to interact with new UO students and families and show your organization’s or department’s UO community support and spirit,” said program coordinator Amy Akana, of University Housing.
Volunteers receive an Unpack the Quack t-shirt during the training Sept. 25 and those who sign up for at least one pre-set shift receive a meal voucher at the end of the shift, good for five points in any University Housing dining venue.
During Unpack the Quack, volunteers should wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops or sandals) and comfortable clothing suited for walking, climbing stairs, carrying items and bending. Don’t bring bags, purses, or valuables as there is no secure place to store them during your shift.
Faculty, staff, alumni and other campus partners can also participate as greeters.
