Vox Resonat – an ensemble of vocal soloists specializing in music of the Baroque, Renaissance and Middle Ages – will perform in Eugene at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 22 at Central Lutheran Church and in Silverton at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23, at Mt. Angel Abbey.
Vox Resonat’s newest program, “Penitentia,” features Renaissance masterpieces written for Lent and Passiontide, including penitential psalms, motets and lamentations, composed by Tallis, Lassus, Josquin, Gombert, Mouton and Rebelo.
Eric Mentzel, University of Oregon School of Music and Dance voice professor and the ensemble’s founder and director, describes the program as “mystical, moving and reflective. This is the season that celebrates the central events and mysteries of the Christian faith.” He adds that some of the most “profound and haunting music” was written for Lent and Easter.
"The composition of the group, usually 12 singers strong, allows the splendor and color of each voice to be heard even as they blend into a rich and glorious whole. The unique composition and flexibility of the ensemble lets us do music that many other groups can't,” Mentzel says.
Vox Resonat has made a number of recordings, exploring a diverse repertoire that includes medieval Italian laude, English Renaissance carols and French Baroque liturgical chant. The ensemble’s most recent disc, featuring music of Jean Titelouze, was released on the Marc Aurel Edition label in October.
Tickets for both concerts will be available at the door.
