The 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Water by the Spoonful” will open at the Hope Theatre in the Miller Theatre Complex on Jan. 21, and tickets are free to UO students.

“Water by the Spoonful” is about a soldier, Elliot, who struggles to find friendship and family after serving in Iraq and returning home to North Philadelphia. The play follows Elliot as he finds solitude in a chat room for recovering addicts.

The playwright is Quiara Alegria Hudes, who wrote the Tony award-winning musical, “In the Heights.” The director is Theresa May, who is an associate professor of theatre arts at the UO. She’s directed other University Theatre plays, including “Sila”, “Burning Vision” and “The Crucible.”

Children 14 and under are not allowed to attend due to the play’s mature content, said Ariel Ogden, the marketing coordinator for theatre arts.

The play will premiere Thursday, Jan. 21, and it will also be shown Jan. 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 and 31. Tickets are $16 for adults and $14 for UO faculty, staff, non-UO college students and students in high school.

Tickets are only free for UO students if they provide their ID card.
