Stephen Wooten, professor of international studies and anthropology, will serve as interim director of Study Abroad, effective immediately, said Dennis Galvan, vice provost for International Affairs.
Cari Vanderkar Moore, outgoing director of Study Abroad, has taken a position as senior international officer at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo after 15 years of service to the UO.
The university’s Study Abroad includes 170-plus programs in more than 90 countries, ranging from one week to an academic year. Credits earned are considered “in-residence” credits and can apply toward degree requirements.
Wooten, Galvan said, is “a leader in international education on campus,” having conducted field research in West Africa and published on that region for more than 25 years.
Wooten has served as director of the African Studies Program and coordinator of the UO Food Studies Program; prior to joining the UO, he was an assistant director in the National Resource Centers at UCLA and University of Illinois.
“He has worked closely with members of the current Study Abroad staff, and has an impressive command of the operations, challenges and possibilities of international education at the UO,” Galvan said. “I look forward to working with Stephen to advance OIA's strategic objective of making study abroad programming more fully integrated with the academic side of the university.”
Galvan also recognized Moore for managing “tremendous growth” in the number of students experiencing international education; 25 percent of students now participate in study or internships abroad.
“From her time as GTF in the office, to her tenure as director of Study Abroad, Cari has served our students with empathy, insight and dedication, building an impressive team in her unit, and positioning UO as a national leader in international education,” Galvan said.
