Melanie Spero is an academic expert in microbiology, bacterial physiology, mechanisms of antibiotic treatment failure, and chronic infections. Her lab examines the bacterial physiologies (biofilm formation, slow growth) that underpin antibiotic treatment failure in chronic infections, such as chronic wound or cystic fibrosis lung infections. The Spero lab applies their knowledge of how bacteria behave in host environments to design next-generation therapies for resolving recalcitrant infections.
