Campus and Community

Well, it looks like the slime is on our face. AroundtheO recently featured the University of Oregon’s Brandy Todd as a candidate for Eugene Slug Queen – but little did we know, the UO is blessed with two contestants for the city’s unofficial-but-oozing ambassadorship. Allow us to introduce Gloria Slimem: Feminist icon, dancing gastropod and champion of Planned Parenthood.
University of Oregon faculty, staff and students are invited to bring their families and be part of the fun on Saturday, Aug. 24, when the UO participates in the Eugene Celebration parade. The university's parade entry will consist of members of the UO community and their family members of all ages.
Any faculty, staff or student on the UO campus has the ability to create a website, thanks to the relatively new UO Blogs service. UO Blogs is a  centrally managed, WordPress-based content management system. It can be used by anyone with an active DuckID to create any kind of website or blog, from one used by a campus department to one used for projects or events. The site takes users through the simple steps to create a website. Because WordPress is designed for low-tech users, the process isn’t complicated.
Smoking during pregnancy appears to be a prenatal risk factor associated with conduct problems in children, according to a study recently published online by JAMA Psychiatry. The paper drew upon data from three different studies, including an adoption-at-birth study conducted by researchers affiliated with the University of Oregon.
It takes more than a little effort to transform oneself from a respectable, professional university employee to a candidate for Eugene Slug Queen. For Brandy Todd, assistant director for administration at the UO Oregon Center for Optics, competing in the city’s offbeat annual competition starts with applying enough makeup to paint a kitchen. Then comes a white-plastic lab coat and a pair of Chuck Taylors laced up – excruciatingly – all the way to the knee.
