Global Justice Program calls for campus speaker proposals

The Global Justice Program, funded by the Savage Endowment for International Relations and Peace, is accepting proposals to bring outstanding national or international experts to the University of Oregon campus during the 2023-24 year.

The visitors will enhance the educational offerings of the university in the fields of humanities and social sciences, focusing primarily on international relations, peace and the United Nations.

All UO faculty members are eligible to apply, with approval of a proposal from their department, unit head or dean. The deadline to apply is Dec. 1 and recipients will be notified by Dec. 31.

Past proposals have included an adaptive refugee housing panel, the Translations of Migration Conference, and a visit from Hugo Echeverria, who works in international law and biodiversity conservation. Total funding for the academic year is $50,000, which can go towards the cost of visitors’ travel, instructional programs, research or other scholarly activities.

Proposals that connect multiple units and disciplines and engage students are encouraged.

This year, in addition to the regular program, the Global Justice Program is launching a special conference initiative on active response to global crises. The goal is to create a series of in-person events to discuss how to efficiently respond to ongoing international and regional crises.

Funding for the special conference is $100,000, and proposals should focus on ways to bring scholars and practitioners to educate the UO community and discuss actionable ideas for peace, social justice and international collaboration. A higher priority will be given to proposals that collaborate with other Oregon higher education institutions or include student participation.

Application details can be found on the Global Justice Program website. Additional questions about the program can be emailed to Cathy Method, special assistant to the dean and vice provost for global engagement at method@uoregon.edu, or Dennis Galvan, dean and vice provost for global engagement, at dgalvan@uoregon.edu.
