Less than a month after shifting how the university handles graduate studies, the Office of the Provost has established a search committee to vet internal candidates for the new position of vice provost of graduate studies.

The announcement by Provost and Senior Vice President Patrick Phillips about the new position comes after the provost decided in March to bring graduate studies into his office.

Previously, the Graduate School was run by a dean. But Phillips said he wanted to streamline the administrative structure for graduate studies in order to put more resources into supporting “the operations that influence efficacy and graduate student support within all UO schools and colleges.”

In the future, overall guidance and leadership for graduate studies will now be provided by Executive Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Janet Woodruff-Borden, who came to the UO in 2018 as the Graduate School dean before being promoted to her current job a year later. Day-to-day operations will be overseen by the new vice provost of graduate studies.

The internal search committee will be led by Phil Scher, divisional dean of social sciences for the College of Arts and Sciences.
