In light of upcoming elections, the Office of Human Resources provides an annual reminder regarding election activity in the workplace.
Recognizing that political activity can cause tension at work, Mark Schmelz, chief human resources officer, offers principles to help navigate conflict when it arises. Schmelz encourages employees to show respect, embrace differences, value civic engagement, take care of one another and deescalate conversations before they can become disruptive.
“The months ahead will continue to challenge us and it is important that we remain connected as one community. With respect, kindness and value for one another as our guide, we will meet the challenges that come our way and make room for all to thrive at the University of Oregon,” Schmelz said.
Oregon law prohibits the use of public funds, equipment and supplies to advocate for or against a ballot measure or candidate and restricts what public employees (which include University of Oregon employees) may do in support of, or opposition to, a ballot measure or candidate.
The political activities annual reminder outlines what public employee may and may not do during work time to comply with university policy.
