The University of Oregon has expanded its list of eligible recyclable materials thanks to changes in the Recycling Modernization Act. Effective July 1, 2025, the UO can now recycle cartons and plastic tubs.
The UO Zero Waste Program is currently updating signs and sending out new sorting guides to reflect these changes.
The list describes the materials the UO can recycle:
- New: Plastic tubs
- New: Cartons
- Glass bottles and jars
- Plastic bottles, jugs and buckets
- Metal cans and foil
- Office paper, newspaper, books, envelopes and paperboard
- Block Styrofoam (please recycle at an outside location)
- Cardboard (please flatten and recycle at an outside location)
The Oregon legislature passed the Recycling Modernization Act (Senate Bill 582) during the 2021 legislative session. The new law became effective Jan. 1, 2022, and recycling program changes started this July. Refer to the Oregon.gov website for more information about the Recycling Modernization Act and the improvements planned for Oregon’s recycling system.
Employees can get involved with the sustainability movement and stay informed through the Zero Waste Program. It works in partnership with other schools, government, municipalities, and state and national recycling associations to promote and develop waste reduction and recovery opportunities.
