With fall term approaching fast, it’s time to get into gear with everything you need to know to bike at the University of Oregon, and beyond.
Bike lockers and cages
Starting Aug. 18, permit holders for bike lockers and cages managed by Transportation Services can renew for the 2025-26 academic year through the parking portal.
If you aren’t renewing a locker permit, please return your key to Transportation Services at 1401 Walnut Street between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, before Sept. 21. For the coming academic year, cages will cost $63 for the year and lockers $78; the rental period runs from Sept. 22, to Sept. 20, 2026. A $25 refundable key deposit is required for the first rental of a locker.
New requests for lockers and cages can be made through the parking portal beginning Sept. 2. There are close to 20 locations for cages and lockers across the Eugene campus.
Bike registration
Register your bike so it can be identified and recovered if stolen. Registration is free and easy.
Bike Program
This arm of the Outdoor Program is a robust resource for students, faculty and staff, with details on free do-it-yourself maintenance workspace, classes, rentals, trips and other UO biking information.
Bike repair
The Bike Program offers full-service bike repair in Suite 008 of the Erb Memorial Union, near the information desk. Summer operation is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and walk-ins are welcome. Customers are also welcome to email the program or call 541-346-6092 regarding repairs. With the return of school in the fall, bike service will run from noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A full-bike inspection is provided free and repairs are generally $20 to $40, with tune-ups costing $35 to $60 and a complete overhaul, $135.
Bike Share
With hubs across the Eugene campus and throughout Eugene and Springfield, PeaceHealth Rides Bike Share offers blue bikes for commuting and UO staff and students get a discounted membership. The bike share option for UO Portland is Biketown PDX.
Electric bikes and more
E-bikes, e-scooters and e-skateboards are permitted at the university on designated bicycle routes but cannot be stored or charged inside UO buildings. These vehicles can be parked at outdoor bike and scooter racks. Racks designed for scooters and a U-lock are available near the EMU, Knight Library and Tykeson Hall. Charging for these vehicles is available in the Millrace Garage, 1625 Millrace Drive, and the UO plans to add additional locations in the future.
E-Bike Lending Library
A collaboration between Transportation Services and the Bike Program, the UO E-Bike Lending Library provides a free, two-week rental of an e-bike to students and employees. Participants can use the e-bike for commuting as well as errands, shopping or recreation.
Bike safety at the university
Transportation Services offers these tips:
- Be aware of your surroundings and reduce distractions as you travel around the university. Cyclists should yield to pedestrians and use designated cycling routes.
- Ride visibly in dark or inclement weather by using a front light and rear light or reflector.
- Wear a helmet to reduce the risk of serious injury from an accident.
- To reduce theft, secure the bike frame to a bike rack with a U-lock.
Bikes and Friends Commuter Club
The Bikes and Friends Commuter Club is open to anyone interested in commuting to UO on bikes or other human-powered transportation options. Whether you are familiar with walking and rolling to UO or want to get started, you’ll make new friends and learn about commuting best practices. This club resumes monthly meetings in late September.
Donate your bike
Staff and faculty can donate bikes year-round to the Bike Program, supporting the effort to make biking at the UO and beyond easier for students.
Bikes can be donated to the Bike Program in Room 008 of the EMU between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and once fall term returns, noon to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, email the Bike Program or call 541-346-6092.
Student mechanics check donated bikes for safety, make necessary repairs and resell them during the annual student Bix4Dux sale just prior to the start of classes in September. Donated bikes in excellent condition also go to the bike program’s rental fleet, and staff can provide receipts for tax purposes.
