Research office rolls out services for compliance and integrity

As UO researchers continue to adjust to new requirements, challenges and opportunities related to the COVID-19 pandemic and a range of other national events and policy changes this year, support from UO’s research administration has taken on added importance.

UO’s Research Compliance Services,  the university’s central administrative unit for many aspects of research compliance and integrity, is meeting the demand with a series of new and continuing information sessions, presentations, consultations and other offerings this fall, including a series of information sessions starting Friday, Oct. 30.

“Compliance and integrity have always been critical components of research administration, but the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in heightened interest in these areas,” said Caitlin Alcorn, assistant director of research compliance services. “We’re pleased to offer our researchers an array of programs to suit their needs.”

Many of the programs being offered are virtual and support the larger goals of the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, which has been streamlining research administration processes. Upcoming information sessions and services include the following:

Fall information sessions

The office has reformatted several of its most popular workshops for remote delivery, ensuring attendees learn about the range of resources available to support them and have ample opportunity to ask questions.

The first of the live information sessions will be held Friday, Oct. 30 from noon to 1:30 p.m. The session will cover regulatory requirements, best practices and the Institutional Review Board submission process for research with human subjects. Subsequent sessions include conflicts of interest in research Friday, Nov. 6, from noon to 1:30 p.m., and resources for training and education in the responsible conduct of research  Friday, Nov. 13, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Each session will be held via Zoom and will not be recorded. Registration and more information is available through MyTrack or by sending an email to researchcompliance@uoregon.edu.

Clinical research support program

The office is developing a support program for those engaged in clinical research, including clinical trials. It will be an ongoing opportunity for students, staff and faculty members engaged in clinical research to learn more about clinical research requirements, network with other clinical researchers, and access local and national resources for clinical research.

Anyone interested in participating should email researchcompliance@uoregon.edu. Interested parties will be added to an email list used for announcing upcoming events and program developments.

Research Administration Portal

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation is embarking on a transformative project to improve research administration services and efficiency for faculty members, staff and students who interact with the office.

The Research Administration Portal project includes a module that will support Institutional Review Board submissions and facilitate review board actions, and a module that will support the conflict of interest program, including submission and review of disclosures.

The review board module is the first module being implemented. For the most current information on the status of the implementation of the Institutional Review Board module of the research portal and opportunities to engage in its development, subscribe to the email list for the Research Administration Portal review board module by visiting the signup page.

Group presentations and individual consultation

Office staff will continue to work remotely this fall and winter and welcomes requests for one-on-one consultations, class or group presentations and general inquiries about any of their service areas. Staff are generally available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Contact them at researchcompliance@uoregon.edu or leave a voicemail at 541-346-2510.
