UO community can express themselves through poetry in MLK Day contest

As part of the University of Oregon’s 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Jan. 22, the Division of Equity and Inclusion invites students, faculty and staff to submit original “Where I’m From” poems reflecting this year’s theme: “The Courage to Belong.”

This theme honors the bravery it takes to show up authentically, especially in spaces where belonging has been historically denied. It invites reflection on identity, inclusion, and the ongoing work of creating communities where everyone is seen and valued.

Submission details:

  • Open to all members of the UO community.
  • Poems should follow the “Where I'm From” format (inspired by George Ella Lyon).
  • Creativity is welcome. Poems may stick closely to the template or take a more personal, expressive approach.
  • Maximum length: 500 words.
  • Submissions can use the template or be submitted as a Word document.
  • Submit poems through Microsoft Forms.
  • Deadline: Dec. 1.
