Revised guidelines for human subjects research delayed to July

Revisions to federal research regulations will affect many UO investigators who conduct research involving human subjects, but the changes won’t be implemented until at least July 19 — six months later than originally scheduled.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued an interim final rule that delayed the original January 2018 implementation date for the revised “Common Rule,” which governs federally funded research involving human subjects. Until the new July implementation date, institutions are required to comply with the pre-2018 Common Rule.

Research Compliance Services, the UO’s central research integrity office, will continue to keep the research community informed through a dedicated Revised Common Rule website, and the unit will work in collaboration with members of the Institutional Review Board to prepare the university research community for the revised regulations.

Additional updates will be posted on a regular basis, as implementation guidance is issued by the federal government. UO researchers should contact Research Compliance Services with any questions at researchcompliance@uoregon.edu or 541-346-2510.
