The annual Governor’s State Employees Food Drive kicks off Friday, Feb. 1, and there’s a new goal: 120,000 pounds of donated food.

Last year UO employees donated the equivalent of 119,000 pounds of food, contributing around 89,000 meals to a statewide total of almost 2.5 million meals donated. The food drive committee has set its sights a little higher this year, cautiously optimistic that a few changes will make giving a little sweeter.

In addition to a new online crowdfunding site, coordinators will also be selling full-size bags of Cosmos Creations puffed corn, in addition to the traditional Euphoria Chocolates. Employees can still participate by bringing in canned goods, signing up for payroll deductions and participating in fundraising events in their departments.

“The Governor’s State Employees Food Drive is a fantastic way for UO employees to support their neighbors in need and to demonstrate our care for the community” said Matt Roberts, UO senior director of community relations.

UO students will participate again this year with Valentine’s Day events in the Erb Memorial Union, including a competition to build a duck out of cans and help with a pop-up sale of puffed corn and chocolates.

The food drive runs Feb. 1 to 28. Around the O will publish stories throughout the month highlighting opportunities to get involved.
