Update: Fenton tree removed; wood available for campus projects

Following days of high winds and rain, a large California incense cedar fell on Fenton Hall early on Thursday, Dec. 10. No injuries were reported, and damage assessment is continuing.

Landscape maintenance supervisor Phil Carroll said the tree fell about 1 a.m. during gusty winds. A crane was brought in Saturday and crews were able to remove the tree with no further damage to the building.

The tree is approximately 100 years old, almost as old as Fenton Hall itself, which was built in 1909.

The tree landed on an area used to house math journals and is part of the math library. No one was in that area when the tree fell, and crews are working to determine the extent of structural damage.

The tree had twin trunks and both were cut into long pieces and will be kept in storage for future reclamation projects. The wood has not been claimed for any specific project, although in the past downed trees have been used by furniture design students in the School of Architecture and Allied Arts and for other projects.
