Not too long ago, the word “media” referred to defined communication channels, such as newspapers, film, radio and television. Content was created by defined roles of reporter, director, disc jockey and broadcaster.But as new technologies have created more systems of social transmission and opened access to a wider populace, the concept of media is no longer so neatly defined.

Kyr, a professor of composition, recently received the prestigious Arts and Letters Award given by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

The festival is expected to attract more than 15,000 people from across the U.S. and overseas over the course an 18-day run this summer.

Smith will be in residence this summer at the Center for Ballet and the Arts at New York University, where she and a collaborator will finish a book on 19th-century ballets.
