Peer Coaching Program helps participants connect and grow

Classified staff, faculty and officers of administration are invited to take part in the 2025-26 Peer Coaching Program. Rooted in the principles of Michael Bungay Stanier’s books The Coaching Habit and How to Tame Your Advice Monster, the program is designed to foster support, curiosity and connection across the university.

The program begins with a kickoff Oct. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Erb Memorial Union Ballroom. The kickoff will introduce the coaching framework and concepts. You’re invited to the kickoff whether you already know you want to participate, you’re still deciding and want to learn more, or you simply want a quick introduction to coaching concepts without joining the full program.

Register for the kickoff event.

The program invites participation in either of two roles:

  • Coaches will support a colleague and develop their own leadership and communication skills.
  • Coachees will receive guidance and encouragement from a peer to help them navigate challenges and reach goals.

No prior experience is required. Just bring a willingness to listen, learn and grow together.

Past participants in the Peer Coaching Program report a wide range of positive outcomes from their experience.

“The coaching program helped me ‘tame the advice monster’ by shifting from offering quick solutions to listening with curiosity,” said Andy Karduna, professor of human physiology. “This approach has strengthened my ability to support others through thoughtful questions and a more empowering mindset.”

For Danielle Benoit, professor of bioengineering, the benefits were equally clear. “Having a dedicated space to reflect, gain perspective and build strategies made a real difference for me — I left each session feeling more confident and supported.”

Program co-facilitator Lara Fernandez, employee development and engagement manager, has also found meaning in her role. “I’ve been honored to get to know my coachees as they navigate challenges, transitions and everyday goals. I can step outside my daily work to truly listen and offer non-biased, non-advice-giving support to coachees who need a safe and confidential place to process.”
