University of Oregon employees play a key role in the success of commencement festivities each year, by serving as volunteers during this long-standing tradition. Employees are encouraged to participate by volunteering their time and service to commencement activities, which take place this year on Sunday, June 16, and Monday, June 17. Volunteers can participate in some or all of the two-day event based on their availability.
“Commencement is a time for celebration. While the focus is on the graduates and their families, it is a reflection of the contributions we all make to fulfilling our mission of educating the next generation of leaders and supporting our students in their journey,” said Kris Winter, interim vice president for student life. “Volunteer service at events and as campus ambassadors is a unique opportunity for employees to be a part of this important milestone for graduates and their families.”
Commencement organizers say volunteers are instrumental in making the event enjoyable for students, their families and the campus community. Volunteer roles include organizing graduates during the procession to Autzen Stadium, assisting graduates and guests at the main celebration and the school and college ceremonies, helping with guest shuttles between Autzen and campus, staffing information stations across campus to help visitors find their way, and more.
Ceremonies on June 16 coincide with Father’s Day. Organizers appreciate all who are able to share a part of this holiday celebrating with the graduates and their families.
Those who can volunteer are asked to complete the online sign-up form by June 3. Employees should talk to their supervisor about availability and scheduling to volunteer during regular work hours. All volunteers must complete training, which includes information and instructions related to specific assignments.
School and college ceremonies take place on Sunday and Monday. Visit the commencement website for a complete listing of ceremonies and celebrations.
