With winter approaching, it's time to prepare for potential disruptions from icy or snowy weather. As a 24/7 residential campus, the University of Oregon rarely closes entirely, but severe weather may result in the cancellation of classes or activities. Here are some reminders to help you stay informed and ready.
Closure, delay and cancellation announcements
If senior leadership decides to close, delay or cancel campus operations, you will find out in the following ways, usually each morning of a severe weather event:
- Email to your uoregon.edu address. Everyone will receive an email. You don’t need to opt in.
- UO Alerts text message. Sign up for UO Alerts texts.
- UO Alerts webpage.
- A notification banner on the UO homepage.
If the university does not announce a closure or delay, assume normal operations.
Weather-related schedule changes for the Eugene campus are made by senior leadership staff and the Incident Management Team in accordance with UO policy. Decisions are usually made each morning and shared as soon as possible.
UO Portland and Oregon Institute of Marine Biology decisions are made by those campuses' senior leadership.
Absences and remote work
During severe weather, use your best judgement to decide whether it’s safe to travel to work. If it’s not safe, work with your supervisor on any work schedule or work location change. If there is work you can perform remotely, you should do that work. If you normally work remotely, you should work as usual at your remote location. Employees who perform essential services are required to come to work even during a closure.
Instructors
If you’re unable to come to campus to teach, inform your department head and notify your students through Canvas. Be flexible with students who can’t come to class or submit coursework due to the severe weather.
