Gov. John Kitzhaber signed into a law a measure that increases regulation of sports agents in Oregon to protect student athletes' eligibility and the integrity of amateur sports

The University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art celebrated its 80th birthday on Saturday, May 4 with a gala that drew more than 200 people for an evening of dancing and donating.

Attendees, who paid $80 for admission, also had the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for art and jewelry. Proceeds from the gala went to fund the variety of K-12 education programs the JSMA organizes to provide essential arts education to schools throughout the state.

All members of the University of Oregon community are welcome at a memorial for David Baker at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 13, in Knight Library, Room 101. Baker, who served as an instructional technology consultant at the UO Libraries, died April 29 at age 35.

He began working at the UO Libraries as a student assistant in 2002. He joined the library staff in 2004, initially working in Access Services and then joining the library’s Center for Media and Educational Technologies in 2007.

Students graduating in June and entering the workforce are in for some good news on the job front. Starting salaries for FY13 graduates are up a little over 5 percent, according to a National Association of Colleges and Employers April 2013 Salary Survey.

Salaries dropped in 2010 as a result of the Great Recession, but are now on the upswing – to the delight and relief of both graduating students and career counselors.

Grab a shovel and a few friends: This year’s University Day – the annual campus-wide beautification event – runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16.

Started in 1905 to improve the grounds before commencement, the day has evolved to celebrate and preserve the natural beauty of the campus.

Each spring, more than 2,000 UO students, staff/faculty and the community gather to plant flowers, spread bark dust and enjoy live entertainment as they improve the campus landscape.

The University of Oregon's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art will present the West Coast premiere of “Light Journey: An Odyssey in Paint” – a retrospective exhibition of the art of Su Kwak – for two months beginning May 28.

The exhibition, in the Schnitzer Museum's Focus Gallery, is organized by the Brauer Museum of Art at Valparaiso University and curated by Jungsil Lee.

It will open with a free, public reception from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, May 31. Kwak will lead an artist’s talk on Saturday, June 1, at 2 p.m.

The University of Oregon will host His Holiness, the 14^th Dalai Lama, at Matthew Knight Arena on Friday, May 10. More than 11,000 spectators are expected to be in attendance to hear the Dalai Lama’s presentation, “The Path to Peace and Happiness in the Global Society.”

Given the number of activities scheduled on campus that day and the security considerations for the visit, there are important details that attendees need to be aware of before the event.

Geri Richmond will deliver the Presidential Research Lecture on May 7 in the Lillis Business Complex.

“Egalitarian Revolution in the Savanna: The Origins of a West African Political System” is a new release in the “Approaches to Anthropology Archaeology” series from Equinox Publishing, Ltd.

Published in 2012 by Stephen Dueppen, a University of Oregon assistant professor in anthropology, the book offers new insights into the evolution of an ancient West African society.

The book is based on several years of field research in Burkino Faso.
